Nicole Jeffers
Hello to all our IKE Eagles,
Welcome to our Eisenhower Elementary Family! My name is Nicole Jeffers. I am the intervention specialist for the Power Lab at IKE. In the next few paragraphs I hope to accomplish three things. First, I would like you to get to know me and my background. Next, I will explain what our Power Lab is and how students qualify. Last, I want to provide our vision for Power Lab. Dana Floetke is my aide in Power Lab. She has an amazing gift for teaching both reading and math. Together, we have a vision for your child's success.
What is my background?
I was born and raised in Manhattan, KS. Many of my childhood friends had parents in the Army at Fort Riley. It was hard as I watched them come and go. I graduated from Kansas State University with a degree in Elementary Education and later received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with a Reading Specialist endorsement. My husband is an Army Veteran and works on post. We moved often for several years for the Army. I have four amazing children that I brag about constantly. You will also hear me talk about my dog Bear, and two cats Lucy and Salem often. I have been teaching for 12 years.
What is the Power Lab?
The Power Lab is our Tier 3 Reading and Math Intervention program for students at Eisenhower. Tier 3 is an intensive instructional program to help students who are a grade level below reach skills to be at their grade level. Students are identified through a strategic process in cooperation with the classroom teacher, administration, and SIT Team or Student Improvement Team. For reading, students are assessed using STAR reports, My View curriculum assessments, and assessment resources that focus on students' phonological awareness skills, and phonemic skills. In grades 4 and 5 we look at their ability to comprehend text as well. We are a Title 1 Reading program with support from the state. For math, student skills are assessed using STAR reports, Go Math curriculum assessments, and our Number Worlds curriculum screeners. Once those areas are identified, we design a program for your child to build their confidence and skills in either area.
Our Vision for Power Lab
While academics are the focus of Power Lab, we feel emotional connections and a positive mental attitude are important too. Mrs. Floetke and I believe first and foremost students must find joy and believe in their abilities. We work on an "I CAN" attitude and try to help students when they feel they can't achieve success. Students must possess a positive connection before they can be successful. As an elementary student I struggled in math. I had an "I CAN'T" attitude for a long time. It wasn't until a teacher created a positive connection to math for me that I finally began to see success. We want to create those connections for your child and help them feel confident and sure of themselves.
I look forward to meeting all of you. I also would like to be a resource if you need help at home with any skills for your child. Please feel free to email me if you have questions.
It's a great day to be an IKE Eagle!
